Abstract

Silicon nitride has been hot-pressed and pressureless sintered using densification aids based on the Al2O3-SiO2-TiO2 system. Hot-pressing can be achieved satisfactorily at 1700 °C with an Al2O3-TiO2 ratio of 1:1; sintering at 1850 °C requires liquid phase compositions richer in Al2O3 and giving a transient ternary liquid at temperatures in the region of 1500 °C. Dense materials prepared in this system show good resistance to oxidation at temperatures up to 1500 °C.
