Effect of ZrO2 on the Crystallization of Grain Boundary Glassy Phase in Sintered Silicon Nitride

Abstract

Effect of ZrO2 as nucleating agent on the crystallization of grain boundary glassy phase in sintered silicon nitride materials with Y2O3, La2O3 and Al2O3 additives were studied. It was found that the nucleator ZrO2 could reduce the period of nucleation and prompt the crystallization of glassy phase. The composition of crystalized phase after different heat treatment time was investigated by X-RAY diffraction. High temperature bending strength of the Si3N4 materials doped suitable amount of ZrO2 after 30 hour heat treatment increased obviously and could keep up to 1300°C.
