Abstract

In this work, the performance of a submerged breakwater consisting of a submerged horizontal plate was investigated, using a numerical model capable of treating arbitrary free-surface configurations, including breaking waves. It was found that for the given conditions of incident waves, breakwater dimensions, and placement, the device has a hydrodynamic efficiency of 0.75. The mechanisms responsible for this high efficiency were clearly identified. The computed vertical wave loading on the structure was much higher than linear estimates predicted. The results of the present study are part of a research program on the coastal protection works for the Barcelona 92 Olympic Marina. Some future developments are also briefly discussed.
