Soil Characteristics of Forest Ecosystems Developed Within the Formerly Periglacial Area of Central Europe

  • Chapter

Abstract

Sediment-petrographical methods of investigation should be more intensely applied to the soil. Soil development has been influenced by geology as well as by recent and past climates. The soil form represents the unity of soil type and substrate, the latter being the result of a sequence of Quarternary soil-forming sediments and their respective grain size distribution. These sediments were formed in the periglacial area during the Pleistocene and exended up to the post-glacial period. As the oldes Pleistocene cover layer the basal sediment overlies the rock desintegration and decomposition zone, followed by the medial and cover sediments. The multi-annual case studies in Central Europe should be pedologically evaluated on this basis. A working group, consisting of pedologists and geologists should be initiated to compare soil conditions in North America and Europe as to forested periglacial areas of the Ice Age.
