Thirty-Year-Changes in Some Forest Communities of Visegrádi Mts., Hungary

  • Chapter
Responses of Forest Ecosystems to Environmental Changes

Abstract

The paper deals with different types of changes of some forest communities, characteristic of the North Hungarian forested landscapes.

Vegetation maps from 1954 and 1984 were compared to detect changes in the phytosociological status of one hectare units of a 24 km2 forested area (“Szöke-forrás” Valley, Visegrádi Mts). Associations determined by soil and relief properties showed considerable conformity compared with the two zonal, climax communities: oak-hornbeam and sessile-turkey oak forests. From these two, the oak-hornbeam association showed a higher degree of change, especially where Carex pilosa type stands turned into sub-nudum or nudum types during the 30 years.

In another investigation, changes in habitat humidity, soil reaction and herb-layer degradation were studied in the two zonal, climax communities by using indicator values based on the flora lists of 176 relevès. From this point of view, the oak-hornbeam forests again proved to be the less stable.

Finally, the regeneration succession on sessile- turkey oak clearings was studied. Two stress-phases were distinguished during the forest regeneration cycle. Their harmful effects on the herb-layer composition, especially on the rate of forest perennials, are discussed.
