Abstract

The session on processes in ecosystems exemplified the two major splits in ecology. These splits arise from: i) the two basic goals that are imposed on ecosystem research and ii) from the two basic ways along which answers to these questions are sought. Both were initially addressed (but not resolved) in the first session of this symposium especially by G. Likens. Both matters are highly controversial among ecologists. This summary does therefore not reflect the different viewpoints in an objective way but gives the rapporteur’s own subjective integration of critical issues.
