Building capacity for systems research at national agricultural research centres: SARP’s experience

Systems approaches for agricultural development

Part of the book series: Systems Approaches for Sustainable Agricultural Development ((SAAD,volume 2))

Abstract

The SARP project (Simulation and Systems Analysis for Rice Production) was established to build research capacity in systems analysis and simulation modelling in developing countries. It has developed into an informal network consisting of national agricultural research centres and universities. Nine countries represented by 16 national agricultural research centres (NARCs) constitute the network, supported by the International Rice Research Institute (The Philippines), the Centre for Agrobiological Research and the Wageningen Agricultural University (The Netherlands).

This paper presents an overview of the main activities and developments during the course of SARP. The first section describes the aims and structure of the project, the participants, the key elements of the training program, and the research topics and themes that have evolved.

The second part discusses the potential role of the systems approach in agricultural research, and indicates how the techniques disseminated by SARP may contribute to the functioning of NARCs in the region. Finally, limitations are identified and tasks for international centres are suggested to help NARCs overcome some of the difficulties experienced.
