Abstract
Based on the conceptual model given by (1986a,b) on frontcaused upwelling in the Yellow Sea, a two dimensional idealized numerical model is proposed in this paper to simulate and describe the physical process of the formation of cold front and its derived circulation, in which only surface heating, thermally driving and tidal mixing are taken into account. As a result, calculated sectional distribution of water temperature, horizontal and vertical circulation patterns are presented, which are well consistent with observations and Hue’s conceptual model. It is concluded that cold front and hence derived upwelling must exist during heating seasons, due to horizontal difference of mixing strength on the shelf like in the Yellow Sea.
