Oceanic and Anthropogenic Controls of Life in the Pacific Ocean

Part of the book series: The GeoJournal Library ((GEJL,volume 21))

Abstract

The paper deals with problems of fishery oceanology in which the understanding of a fishery situation is based on the combined analysis of fishery data and space- and time-averaged data on the distribution of ocean surface temperature. It is supposed and illustrated that the determination of quantative relationships between the ocean surface temperature variability and the migration behaviour of fish schoals enables forecasting probable fishing grounds.

The information support for this investigation was files of isothermal charts of surface temperatures averaged over three and ten days for the NW Pacific, daily sea water temperature measurements made by fishing and search vessels, data on daily output of the entire fishery fleet, archives of fishery and hydrological retrospective information.

The data was processed by personal computers. Data files on computer were created. Techniques and algorithms for analyzing fishery and hydrological information in an interactive mode were developed, with quantative characteristics being evaluated and fishery situations displayed graphically.

Procedures for drawing hydrological plots on specified scales from routine temperature measurements were developed.

Such approach allowed to relate the quantative variability of hydrological fields of the ocean surface to the migration of saira schoals during the actual fishery.

Gathering detail information on the actual fishing ground, along with developing algorithms and programs for analyzing the information on personal computers, allows to build an information model of the fishing ground. The model can be used in the future for solving scientific and applied problems of fishery oceanography which aim is to evaluate the parameters of the relationship between environment parameter variation and fish schoals migration. For fishery industry, the model can be used for the developing of processes of assimilating and using various types of information of managing and forecasting fishery.
