Abstract

Interest in the feeding of planktivorous fish began in earnest with the awareness that their feeding could structure the body size and species composition of zooplankton communities (Hrbacek, 1962; Brooks & Dodson, 1965). There have been numerous studies subsequent to this work further demonstrating this capability (O’Brien, 1987; Paloheimo & Fulthorpe, 1987; Skoptsov & Kruppenikova, 1983; Spencer & King, 1984). Virtually all of these studies confirm that planktivorous fish focus their feeding on the larger prey present but the mechanism(s) involved in this size selective feeding is less clear (Eggers, 1977; Wright & O’Brien, 1984).
