Abstract
The general theory of valuations on fields was initiated in 1932 by W. Krull in his paper Allgemeine Bewertungstheorie, J. reine angew. Math. 167 (1932), 160-196. After that many other algebraists contributed to the theory, the most important of whom were O.F.G. Schilling, P.J. Jaffard, E. Artin, O. Zarisky, P. Ribenboim, O. Endler and M. Fukava.
