Abstract

Interaction between source and sink can be envisaged as occurring due to feedback inhibition of source assimilation by sucrose in the event of its accumulation in the leaves due to low sink demand. However, conclusive evidence of sink regulation of source photosynthesis, whether by assimilates or hormones, is lacking. Sucrose loading into the phloem is driven by a pH-dependent sucrose-proton co-transport (symport) mediated by a carrier. Critical examination of the evidences in favour of and against the apoplast and symplast concepts of loading leads to the conclusion that phloem loading may occur along two pathways-apoplastic and symplastic-which are not mutually exclusive and vary with species. Unloading of assimilates at the site of utilization in the sink is the reverse of loading. The effect of environmental (light, temperature, water, and CO2), nutritional, metabolic, and hormonal factors on the regulation of source-sink activity is discussed.
