Abstract
Families have been objectively sampled from the Utah population to gain a population perspective for both research and applications of principles regarding genetic factors in common cardiovascular diseases. Answers are sought for several important questions. What is the nature and frequency of genetic factors that predispose individuals to develop cardiovascular disease? What are specific pathophysiologic mechanisms? How common are specific syndromes among persons with cardiovascular disease and in the general population? Do specific environmental factors interact with genetic factors to foster the occurrence of cardiovascular disease? How can we apply any new knowledge we learned to help control cardiovascular disease?
