Abstract

Although the photochemistry of Cr(CO)6, including the generation of Cr(CO)5 and examination of its properties, has been the subject of many investigations, the final word has by no means been said and this is an appropriate moment and context to review the position. Where appropriate we shall mention the photochemistry of Mo(CO)6 and W(CO)6.

  73. 1T2g and 1T1g states correlate with C4v states of 1E + 1B2 and 1E + 1A2 symmetry respectively; in either case the 1E state is of lower energy. The 1E′ state correlates with the 1A1′ and 1E′ states of D3h structure with 1E′ having the lower energy; the 1E′ state correlates with both 1E and 1A1 (ie excited and ground states) with C4v structure so the overall effect is energy downhill.
