Abstract
The development of improved mixing tube designs for abrasive water jets has been hindered by the lack of a reliable, non-intrusive method for measurement of the velocities achieved by particles and drops in the three-phase jet leaving the mixing tube. Unless these velocities can be determined, it is difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of momentum transfer from the coherent pure water jet to abrasive particles in the mixing process. This paper describes a method used for abrasive water jet velocity measurements which uses a forward-scatter LDV system. Using the forward-scatter technique makes it possible to utilize a thin, low power laser to produce a small probe volume. Results are presented for velocity measurements obtained over a range of operating conditions and mixing tube sizes.
