Abstract

The phrase “private language argument” refers to a philosophical strategy crucially informing Wittgenstein’s later work. But while my aim here is an evaluation, from a specific point of view, of this very strategy, it should be stressed that the issue addressed by the private language argument is of course a more general one, occupying a central place in the paradigm defined by Descartes and Locke.
