Abstract

A series of experiments on clay, plastic clay and bread dough have been performed in an attempt to explain the deformation in the Pine Creek Shear Zone (PCSZ) north of Pine Creek. The NNWN trend and contrary plunging F1 fold system to the east and west of the PCSZ were the principal factors causing the deformation of the 15°-30° clockwise-inclined foliation in the zone. In the experiments these factors were simulated by complex deformation: simple coaxial compression together with rotational faulting in the basement.

A model for the deformation in the zone was derived, from which the genesis and geometry of the foliation, and subhorizontal attitude of the b1 lineation in the zone could be determined. It could also suggest a sinistral transpression during the deformation. The pattern, growth mechanism and evolution of structures (folds, cleavage, faults, thrusts) was examined in the experiment. The model corresponds to the D1 stage of the PCSZ evolution. Structures of the Darwin-Pine Creek-Katherine wrench system were subsequently superimposed on the already existing form of the foliation.
