Abstract

Basement Tectonic Conferences have long been preoccupied with relationships between structures in cratons and their platform covers, ie intraplate tectonics. There are, however, many instances where basement influences, especially the ‘buttress-anvil’ effect of the craton edge, play a major role in determining structural development in the orogenic belt itself. Some examples, mainly from the Appalachians, of plan and section patterns are outlined.
