Abstract
The three-letter code is still used throughout the world to denote pacing mode. This code was established by the Inter-Society Commission for Heart Disease Resources (ICHD) as a standardized means for identifying the functional operation of a pulse generator, irrespective of model number, trade name or complexity. In this initial ICHD code, the first letter indicates the paced chamber(s) and the second letter the chamber(s) being sensed while the third letter represents the mode of response to a sensed event, i.e. how the pacemaker will react to cardiac electrical activity (Figure 1).
