Abstract

In this book, I have relied on acquisition data to evaluate linguistic-theoretic claims. In particular, I have attempted to provide confirmation of recent proposals in the theoretical literature on the basis of crosslinguistic data from French and English child language. By assuming the VP-internal subject hypothesis, the verb raising analysis of inflectional affixation in French as compared to affix lowering in English, and a principled bias in UG toward isomorphism between levels of representation, a cluster of properties in the early grammar is accounted for.
