Abstract
This paper gives an introduction to the requirements of a realtime software environment by highlighting the deficiencies of a particular tool (MUSE) for the development of a condition monitoring application. The term “realtime” is defined, various knowledge based diagnostic techniques briefly reviewed and the current approach to the development of tools for a realtime environment within Lloyd’s Register is described.
