Blood Pressure Signal Diagnosis-An Expert System Approach
The direct observation of the arterial blood pressure wave by means of a pressure transducer has been adopted especially for seriously ill patients. The signal obtained by this method correlates closely with dynamic events taking place in the heart and arterial system during each cardiac cycle. Consequently, diagnostic information can be extracted from the blood pressure (BP) signal.
In this paper, an expert system approach to the problem of BP signal diagnosis is presented. This approach has been developed in the framework of an expert system shell, namely KES. Rules that correlate the BP pattern shape with diseases in the circulation system have been formulated in terms of a set of primitive patterns and they constitute the expert system’s knowledge-base. When a BP signal is interpreted according to this knowledge-base, a diagnosis is extracted and furthermore the reasoning for issuing this diagnosis can be given.
For the development of a fully automatic system, the expert system module has been interfaced with a signal analysis module which is responsible for BP signal acquisition and pattern recognition. The system was tested using a sample of central arterial BP signals.
