Abstract

The main objective of applied ecotoxicologlcal research is the production of indications useful for hazard assessment and risk evaluation for the management of potentially harmful chemicals. In the present paper, the scheme of an integrated ecotoxicologlcal approach is described. In particular the predictive capability of such an approach and the possibility of applying it to Environmental Impact Studies are discussed. Risk indicators for various kinds of targets (man, ecosystems) and for different time and space scales are proposed and quantified. In particular, numerical indices have been elaborated for: (i) small scale, short term consequences of a direct discharge in air, water and soil; (ii) long term risk for man and the environment deriving from distribution processes in the various environmental compartments on a local scale; (iii) long term environmental risk on a global scale.
