Abstract

The paper reviews the nature of indicators and indices as knowledge carriers in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process and revisits the theory of measurement in the perspective of its application to the knowledge relevant for EIA. In particular, the most critical issues related to the comparison and composition of indices are pointed out and discussed.
