Abstract
The very few red compact galaxies that are known have been found near more massive galaxies: M 32 near M 31, NGC 4486B near M 87.
-
Do these low-luminosity ellipticals owe their very high surface brightness to gravitational interaction, or are they the genuine low-mass end of the family of ellipticals?
-
Is it possible to find galaxies that would fill the gap between these compacts and normal ellipticals?
