Abstract
The characteristics of the optical emission-line gaseous component of elliptical galaxies are reviewed. We focus on three questions — the origin and fate of the gas and its excitation. The relative merits of accretion or infall events and cooling-flows are compared with regard to these questions. The cooling-flow model has the largest number of hurdles to overcome.
