Dark Matter in Elliptical Galaxies

Abstract

Evidence for the existence of dark halos around elliptical galaxies is reviewed, with emphasis on recent observations of stellar kinematics and cold gas. Elliptical galaxies with extended HI disks offer the best prospect of measuring the density profile at large radii. There is little evidence for a variation of the mass-to-light ratio inside two half-light radii. In some elliptical galaxies a modest increase is indicated at larger radii. Radial velocity studies of planetary nebulae and globular clusters will not put strong constraints on mass-to-light ratios, but provide a direct probe of the dynamical structure of the stellar halos out to large radii.
