Abstract

In this paper a question concerning an apparent conflict in current definitions of productivity is raised, and an answer is provided on the basis of an analysis of adverbs ending in -lily as listed in The Oxford English Dictionary. Adverbs ending in -lily are frequently mentioned in the literature as cases of restricted productivity, and the data provided by The OED is, in some respects, surprising. To that extent it makes interesting points about the definition of productivity. This paper is, however, also an exercise in methodology, pointing out some of the advantages and problems of working with The OED as a source of data. This aspect of the paper is a kind of recurring sub-text throughout the presentation.
