The Evolution of Binary Stars General Considerations

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 179))

Abstract

Apart from the parameters which define the stellar evolution, mass and chemical composition, three more parameters determine the evolution of close binaries: the total mass of the system M (=M1+M2), the mass ratio q (=M2/M1) and the orbital period P. Evolutionary computations for close binaries can start with the two components at the ZAMS; the system is then defined by these three parameters. Owing to the interaction among the components where mass and angular momentum transfer may occur, these three parameters will change during the evolution. We may distinguish between unevolved systems (before possible interaction between the components) and evolved systems.
