Abstract

Figure 1 shows a typical pattern of residuals (Taff et al. 1990c), over an entire plate, from a cubic plate model normally used for the astrometric reduction of wide field-of-view Schmidt plates (e.g. 6.5 × 6.5 deg2). Their presence explains the generally poor results obtained by previous workers when they attempted to astrometrically reduce large portions of Schmidt plates. This systematic form of the residuals also shows that precision has been meaningless since the problem is dominated by issues of accuracy. Any quadratic or cubic plate model will successfully randomize some small area, nominally a square degree, of any Schmidt plate. Without the appropriate version of Fig. 1, one can not know where this good section is; it does move around the plate as the terms included in the plate model are varied.
