Abstract

The paper is aimed at discussing problems of design and/or choice of appropriate bioreactors for different bioprocesses. Starting from a picture book showing different types of bioreactors an attempt is carried out to elaborate some basic selection rules based on the key variables: type of process and scale of operation.

The lecture then focusses on various approaches of mathematical modelling of bioreactors in order to throw more light upon the interaction of design and operation. The concept of structured modelling of bioreactor systems for the purpose of scale up will be stressed. This concept emphasis the demand for designing appropriate structures for both components of the system (abiotic and biotic phases) and coupling the two in order to study the influence of various operating conditions on the outcome of the process at different scale of operations.
