Abstract
W UMa-type systems are eclipsing binaries with orbital periods between about 5 and 18 hours showing continuous variations of light. They were defined as a class in general reviews of Binnendijk (1965, 1970, 1977) and Rucinski (1985a). The W UMa-type stars occupy a special position among binary stars for a number of reasons. We will enumerate those reasons below, stressing, if necessary, that some seem to be based on misconceptions or old, invalid data.
