Abstract
In roughly two centuries astronomers have gone from an almost complete disbelief in the existence of binary stars to a near certain knowledge that more than onehalf of the stars are members of binary or multiple systems. Analogously, in approximately one-half century the field of interacting binaries has changed from the study of a very few apparently unique systems to a very active multifaceted area of astrophysics.
