Abstract
To gain an understanding of why strikes occur and what factors lead to a settlement, it is important to examine da ta pertaining to the level at wh ich negotiations take place, that is, the individual bargaining unit. Despite this, there has not been to date a study of the incidence and duration of strikes in the United States on a comprehensive micro data set of contract negotiations. This reflects the difficult problems involved in collecting this type of data. The purpose of this paper is to take a step in this direction by illustrating how these problems can be overcome and to present so me results for the five-year period 1973-77.
