Abstract
Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan L. Millsp.) and velvet bean (Mucuna deeringiana Bort. Merr.) are large seeded tropical legumes of Indian and southeast Asian origin, respectively (Duke, 1981). Pigeon pea was introduced into the Caribbean by African slaves and fresh pigeon peas are a popular vegetable. They are stewed and served with rice or tuber crops. Velvet bean was introduced into the new world as a forage and cover crop.
