Abstract

Two important aspects of how nutrient limitation affects an autotroph-herbivore system were discussed in the preceding chapter: the influence of nutrient input levels on the steady-state values and the influence on system stability. In a sense, the present chapter is complementary to the concerns of Chapter 5. Whereas that chapter was largely concerned with how nutrient limitation alters the stability and steady-state values of an autotroph-herbivore system, Chapter 6 is primarily concerned with the complementary problem of the indirect effects of the herbivores, through nutrient recycling, on the available nutrients and autotrophs of an ecosystem.
