Patterns and processes in a landscape under stress: the study area

  • Chapter

Abstract

The function of this chapter is twofold. First, it forms an introduction to the study area of this book, describing the structure and genesis of the main landscape types that can be found in The Netherlands nowadays. The second function of this chapter is to give a general overview of the effects of modern land use on the landscape. The overexploitation of the Dutch landscape is placed in an international context of other highly industrialized countries.
