Abstract

One of the great paradoxes of South Wales is the close juxtaposition of grim and declining industrial valleys with some fine unspoilt uplands. The original beauty of the valleys has been transformed by the iron workers and the coal miners, but the country at the heads of the valleys is some of the most attractive in Wales.
