Abstract
The Stiperstones ridge of Shropshire has an imposing skyline. Groups of craggy grey tors rise from the steep slopes that run through heather, bracken and pine to the lusher land in surrounding valleys. Many local legends have arisen to explain their origin, legends involving witches and the Devil. It is indeed remarkable how in the mythology of British folklore so many classic landforms have been seen as the works of Satan!
