Abstract

The survival of the unspoilt Peak District, following close on the heels of urban and industrial chaos in Sheffield, always comes as a very pleasant surprise. In fact, the drive from Sheffield to Glossop along the A57 is simply delightful, passing by the man-made expanse of the Ladybower Reservoir and close to the high Peak and through Snake Pass. However, to appreciate this countryside fully you need to take to the footpaths and tracks, and none is better than that along the beautiful Alport valley. The main footpath begins beside the A57 just west of the Alport River, near Hayridge Farm (SK 141896).
