Abstract
Messenger RNA was discovered in bacteria. In 1953 Hershey [1] noticed that the appearance of metabolically active RNA followed the infection of E. coli with the bacteriophage T2. Subsequent analysis [2, 3] showed that the RNA was rapidly synthesized and had been formed from and would hybridize to the viral DNA. By prelabelling the host bacterial cells with 13C- and l5N-labelled growth medium and then infecting them in the presence of 12C- and 14N-labelled media, Brenner, Jacob and Meselson [4] were able to show that the newly made (isotopically light) viral mRNA was translated on preexisting (isotopically heavy) cellular ribosomes. Furthermore, when they employed radioactive amino acids, they demonstrated that the translation product was viral protein.
