Deforestation and habitat loss

  • Chapter
The World Environment 1972–1992

Abstract

The Earth’s vegetation patterns are highly dynamic, and within the past million years they have changed considerably in response to changing climates (especially the recurrent Quaternary glaciations, which were associated with relatively cool and dry conditions in the tropical zones). The present extensive tropical forest cover in such regions as the Amazon and Zaire river basins is believed to have resulted from recolonization from relatively restricted refugia over the past 10,000–15,000 years (Figure 1). Within the past 3,000 years, and especially in the present century, human actions have become the predominant cause of change in the world’s vegetation cover, and forests, drylands and wetlands have all been severely affected (dryland degradation has been considered in Chapter 6).
