Abstract

The oceans and seas cover 70 per cent of the Earth’s surface and are active components of the global biosphere. One of the major developments of the last 20 years has been the realization that this vast sector of the environment is dynamic and interactive: thus, long-term environmental management of even a small portion of the marine environment requires an integrated approach which must include consideration of the coastal zones and also their drainage basins and the atmosphere. The main sectoral issues are given in Box 1.
