Abstract
The oceans cover 71 per cent of the Earth’s surface and—through their interactions with the atmosphere, lithosphere and biosphere in what is known as the geochemical cycles—have played a major role in shaping the conditions that have made life possible on Earth. In addition to serving as the habitat for a vast array of plants and animals, the oceans also supply people with food, energy and mineral resources. More than half the people in developing countries obtain 30 per cent or more of their animal protein from marine fish (Chapter 11).
