Abstract

Primary hepatic tumours are rare in children. They present a wide spectrum of benign and malignant entities that take origin from the mesenchymal and epithelial structures of the organ (Table 1.1). Many of the diagnostic categories are strongly age related and, among the malignant tumours, prognosis is often strongly linked to tumour type. The most common benign livertumours are haemangiomas and hamartomas, both of mesenchymal origin 1. In Western countries, hepatoblastoma is one of the least common malignant neoplasms in the paediatric population, but at the same time, it is the most common primary malignant tumour of the liver in childhood2.
