Abstract
In Western societies tumour in the non-cirrhotic liver is much more likely to be secondary to primary sites such as breast, colon, stomach and lung than of hepatic origin1. Overall some 10% of unselected post-mortem livers contain metastatic tumour and, indeed, the liver is the most frequent site of blood-borne metastatic growths, being affected in up to 50% of all patients dying of malignant disease. Conversely when the liver is cirrhotic, some 10% can be expected to contain primary tumours, whilst metastases are seen with reduced frequency (in only about 1% if biliary cirrhosis is excluded2).
