Abstract

Abnormalities of liver function have been associated with ulcerative colitis for many years. More recently it has been appreciated that Crohn’s disease, especially when it affects the large bowel, probably has a very similar range and incidence of liver complications1. The precise incidence of liver involvement is almost impossible to assess because of the difficulties associated with comparisons between different series, patient selection and needle versus wedge biopsy amongst others. It is generally accepted that up to 50% of patients will show minor abnormalities of function (5-nucleotidase, alkaline phosphatase, BSP retention). Less than 10%. however, will have significant clinical disease2. Jaundice is uncommon.
