Abstract
This paper summarises and compares the operation and performance of the EPRI filter during the 1987 and 1991/92 periods of operation at the Grimethorpe PFBC Establishment. During the latter period the filter was operated as an integral component of the Grimethorpe Topping Cycle Project, which formed part of British Coal Corporation’s overall strategy in the development of their Topping Cycle.
The periods described cover a total of 2369 hours operation at 7–10.5 bar and 780–860 °C. In particular, the modifications and changes carried out prior to the 1991/92 operation are assessed in the light of the experience gained during 1987. The modifications carried out during 1991/92 are reviewed and appraised.
Specific items which are addressed include:
This chapter briefly describes:
-
effect of feedstocks on filter performance
-
performance of the ceramic filter elements
-
performance of new pulse valves
-
effectiveness of preheating the pulse air
-
improvements to the element hold-down system.
In addition, a summary of the outstanding issues relating to the commercial development of rigid ceramic filter units, highlighting the main issues and putting forward suggestions as to how best these can be addressed, is presented. Of particular importance is the long-term durability of the ceramic elements and the cleanability of the dust cakes generated by advanced fossil fuel power plants.
