General Features of Polymers at Interfaces

  • Chapter
Polymers at Interfaces

Abstract

In this chapter we give a brief overview of what is empirically known about polymers in the proximity of an interface. Most of the topics mentioned here are treated extensively in chs. 5–10. We start with some general discussion of the interfacial region (sec. 2.1) after which we consider the adsorbed amount and structure of adsorbed layers (secs. 2.2 and 2.3). We then discuss the adsorption of polydisperse polymers (sec. 2.4), competitive adsorption in polymer mixtures and in binary solvents (sec. 2.5), adsorption kinetics (sec. 2.6), effects of flow fields (sec. 2.7), and negative adsorption (depletion, sec. 2.8). Finally, we pay some attention to fluid interfaces (sec. 2.9) and interfaces in polymer melts (sec. 2.10).
