  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Environmental Management Series ((EMISS,volume 37))

Abstract

The advantages of the use of organisms over other methods for monitoring aquatic contamination have been discussed at length by several authors (Butler et al., 1971; Hang et al., 1974; Bryan, 1976; Phillips, 1976a, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1990b, 1991; Bryan et al., 1985; Waldichuk, 1985; Phillips and Segar, 1986); their conclusions are summarised here. The three basic methods employed for monitoring aquatic ecosystems for contamination will be dealt with in turn.
